Frequently asked questions

What are classic foil highlights?

Classic foil highlights are the most popular way to put hair in the spotlight. The strands are worked through evenly from the roots to the lengths. Classic foil highlights give the hair a smooth, silky texture and create a stylish, mostly lighter look. They can be created in any brightness, colour, nuance and contrast – whatever you wish.

Classic highlights look similar to all-over hair colour but grow out more naturally, so they need less frequent touch-ups.

What other types of highlights are there?

Highlights describes a colouring technique that covers many different styles.

The service bookable above is classic foil highlights.

Besides that there are:

  • Highlight techniques: Babylights, Highlights, Lowlights
  • Colour gradients: Balayage, Ombré, Sombré, Sunkissed, Colormelt, Bronde

Every technique has its specific use and can create a different look – from subtle to dramatic.

All of the techniques listed here can be booked with us and are available under Balayage or Babylights.

How can highlights best be cared for?

For the best results when caring for highlights, please note the following:

  • Use special care products for coloured and/or highlighted hair
  • Avoid heat during styling and use a heat protectant
  • Always use a conditioner and once a week a hair mask to protect the hair and add moisture
  • Avoid chlorinated or salty water
  • Wear a sun hat when you're outdoors for longer
Can foil highlights also be coloured?

Foil highlights can be done either with bleach or colour, depending on the wish. Most often they are bleached because a lighter result is desired.

We use exclusively products from L'Oréal and Olaplex for a perfect colour result.

For our vibrant colour results we work with Directions.

How long does the appointment take?

The duration depends on the length and thickness of your hair.

As a rule, an appointment takes between 2.5 and 4 hours.

When does Olaplex make sense?

Olaplex is an add-on option available with every service.

Olaplex is a product range from the USA that instantly conjures up cared-for, healthy hair by repairing broken disulphide bonds in the hair structure. It also enables gentler colour changes, for example from dark hair to platinum blonde.

When do I need to refresh my highlights?

Foil highlights are usually felt to be too grown out after 6 to 8 weeks. To preserve the look and shine of foil highlights we recommend using special care products developed for coloured and highlighted hair.

A touch-up is usually only needed at the roots.

For frequent highlight clients we recommend alternating between top-of-head highlights and full highlights to give the strained hair at the nape a break.

What is a toning (Glossing)?

A toning is a refinement of the hair, mostly used after bleaching processes to nuance the colour. It also gives the hair extra shine.

A toning should be refreshed every 6-8 weeks to keep the colour result.

Which hair type are classic foil highlights suited to?

Classic foil highlights suit every hair type – straight, curly or wavy.

They are ideal for giving the hair volume, definition and dimension. With curls they help to emphasise and shape the natural look.

For straight hair they are a great option too, helping to create a soft, natural definition.

Which hairstyle suits foil highlights best?

Foil highlights add a unique look to every hair.

They show off best in a light, casual style.

A long, straight Bob or a simple, medium-length Bob are both great options to show foil highlights to their best advantage.

A braided ponytail or a casual, lightly waved beachwave look also pair beautifully with foil highlights.

What are the advantages of classic foil highlights?

One of the biggest advantages of foil highlights is the relatively strong lightening option without bleaching the whole head. Foil highlights also allow for a broader colour selection.

While other colouring techniques offer a limited number of shades, foil highlights let you use more than one colour at a time to create more complexity, more interest, more dimension and more texture.

This technique allows multiple shades to be integrated in the hair and creates a real interplay of colour.

Like all other techniques, classic highlights should always be done by a hairdresser – otherwise the hair can be permanently damaged.
